CHAPTER 7

THE PRISON CELL ROOM was dark and cold. Light from burning torches in the corridor flickered faintly through the thick black iron bars. The floor, walls, and ceiling were all made of a solid brown speckled bricks. Inside the cell was a small wood and canvas bed with a single, ragged gray wool blanket on top. With no windows, the air was stuffy and stale. Occasionally a prison guard would pass by the cell, momentarily glancing inside as he continued his rounds.

Elrik lay in the bed, trying to piece together everything that had happened the past few days. It all seemed like a nightmare to him. Was he really here? Was this all really happening? How would he explain all of this to his stern, yet vulnerable father? And what about Lunatiel? Was she safe? Kalia was proving much more unpredictable and dangerous than he had ever anticipated. Certainly she was behind the raven attacks, and now this. What was next?

A large rat scurried through the bars and into the cell- its nose and whiskers twitching as it searched in vain for any little morsel that may have been dropped by a careless prisoner. Elrik looked down and kicked it with his foot in anger. Squealing in pain, it escaped back out through the bars, just as quickly as it had come.

A guard approached his prison cell and banged on the bars. He then shoved a wooden bowl through a small opening at the bottom of the cell door. Elrik walked over and picked it up off the floor. The smell of the steaming brown slop inside the bowl that supposedly passed as food almost made him wretch. This was nothing like the kinds of foods his discriminating palate was used to! Still, he was famished, and he managed to gulp down every last drop of the foul-tasting stuff.

A few hours later, a prison guard came to the cell door with a visitor. It was his good friend Grif. Serving with the Town Guard, he was also wearing the standard chainmail and steel helmet uniform.

The guard stood by as the two old friends talked. “Elrik, are you alright? I heard that you had been arrested and I could not believe it.”

Elrik smiled. “Yes, I am fine. But I cannot say much good about the living accommodations. And the food is not exactly cuisine.”

“I am happy to see you still have your sense of humor. What happened?”

“They found my gold ring in the Lucky Pearl jewelry shop after it was robbed last night, and are blaming me. Obviously I was framed. I was not even near that shop last night, but do not have an alibi to prove it. I suspect Kalia is behind it.”

Grif looked over his shoulder to see if the guard was listening, and then lowered his voice. “Yes, I know. The whole town is humming about the news of your arrest, but of course I know you are innocent. I tried to use my influence with the sergeant of the Town Guard to get you released, but they said no way.
